What is the first treatment for pityriasis alba?

Pityriasis alba causes lighter, often slightly dry patches, commonly on the face of children and young people. The colour difference can look stronger after tanning because nearby skin becomes darker; it does not mean the pale patch itself is tanning. Emollient Therapy softens scale and supports the skin barrier. Topical Corticosteroids may be prescribed briefly when redness, itch, or inflammation is noticeable. A clinician should confirm the diagnosis because several conditions can cause pale patches.

Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, especially after washing, and use gentle cleansers instead of scrubbing. Protect exposed skin from daylight so surrounding skin does not tan and increase the contrast. If a corticosteroid is prescribed, use the stated amount and site; do not apply it near the eyes or for longer than directed. Avoid picking or using bleaching products. The texture often improves before the colour becomes even, so changes may be gradual.

Arrange a review if patches spread quickly, become sharply white, lose sensation, develop marked scale, or involve the scalp or nails.
