What is the first treatment tried for oligohydramnios?

Oligohydramnios means there is less amniotic fluid than expected. A scan measures the fluid and checks the baby’s growth, movement, position, placenta, and blood flow when appropriate. The team may also ask about leaking fluid, medicines, blood pressure, and other pregnancy concerns.

Management varies according to the amount of fluid, whether the membranes have ruptured, the baby’s wellbeing, and how far the pregnancy has progressed. Monitoring may include repeat scans and fetal heart-rate checks. If continuing the pregnancy becomes less safe, induction of labour or another birth plan may be discussed.

Attend every scan and maternity review, and report possible fluid leakage, bleeding, contractions, or a change in fetal movement. Call your maternity unit urgently for reduced or absent fetal movement, a gush or ongoing trickle of fluid, vaginal bleeding, regular contractions, severe abdominal pain, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. These symptoms can require examination, monitoring, or a change in the birth plan.
