What is the first treatment tried for neuroblastoma?

Short answer

The first treatment for neuroblastoma is often chemotherapy, especially when the tumour needs shrinking before surgery or intensive treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common initial approach
Chemotherapy when reduction is needed
Key planning factors
Age, tumour biology, location, and spread
Monitoring
Blood counts, scans, and blood or urine markers

How the starting plan is chosen

Neuroblastoma can behave differently depending on a child’s age, the tumour’s location, its biology, and whether it has spread. Doctors use biopsy or surgical samples, scans, blood and urine tests, and other risk features to place the illness into a treatment group.

For a tumour that is localised and suitable for removal, surgery may be central. When disease is extensive or pressing on important structures, chemotherapy is commonly used early to reduce the tumour burden. Higher-risk plans may later include surgery, additional medicines, stem-cell support, radiotherapy, or targeted radioisotope therapy.

What families can do now

Ask the paediatric oncology team to explain the risk group, the goal of the first cycle, and how response will be measured. Bring a complete list of medicines, allergies, and supplements. During chemotherapy, monitor temperature exactly as instructed, encourage fluids when allowed, and report poor intake, vomiting, diarrhoea, pain, or unusual sleepiness.

The team may arrange a central line, blood-count monitoring, infection precautions, nutrition help, and medicines for nausea. Treatment appointments can be demanding, so ask who to call outside clinic hours and what care can be provided at home.

When urgent help is needed

Call the oncology team immediately for a fever or suspected infection, difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, inability to drink, marked drowsiness, new weakness, bleeding, or a significant change in urine output. Emergency care is appropriate for severe breathing problems, a seizure, collapse, or a child who is difficult to wake. Use the temperature threshold and emergency instructions supplied by the treating team.

Questions for your doctor

What risk group does my child have, and why is chemotherapy first? When will scans or urine tests show whether it is working? When might surgery or targeted radioisotope therapy be considered? Which fever or line-related symptoms require immediate action?

Questions people ask

Does every child with neuroblastoma start with chemotherapy?

No. Some localised tumours may be managed with surgery or close observation, while more extensive disease often needs chemotherapy early.

What treatments may follow chemotherapy?

Depending on risk and response, care may include surgery, further medicines, stem-cell support, radiotherapy, or targeted radioisotope therapy.
