What Is the First Treatment for Nail Psoriasis?

Nail psoriasis can cause pitting, ridges, thickening, crumbling, or separation from the nail bed. A dermatologist first checks that psoriasis is the likely cause because fungal infection and repeated injury can look similar. For limited disease, treatment may focus directly on the nail or nearby skin. When several nails, joints, or wider psoriasis are involved, a treatment affecting the immune pathway may be discussed.

Keep nails short, file rough edges gently, and protect them from biting, picking, and prolonged water exposure. Use prescribed treatment consistently and allow time for new nail growth to replace damaged nail. Do not remove a separated nail yourself. Intralesional steroid injection may be considered for selected nails, while biologic therapy may be discussed when nail disease accompanies more extensive psoriasis or joint symptoms.
