What is the first treatment for a middle ear infection?

A middle ear infection, also called otitis media, can cause ear pain, reduced hearing, fever, or irritability. A clinician examines the eardrum and considers symptom severity, duration, age, previous episodes, and general health. Some infections improve with supportive care, while others need Antibiotic Treatment. Antibiotics do not treat every cause of ear symptoms and should be used only when prescribed.

Arrange a GP Consultation if pain is significant, symptoms are persistent, or you are unsure whether the problem is an infection. Use age-appropriate pain relief exactly as directed on the label or by a clinician. Rest, drink fluids, and avoid putting cotton buds, oil, or unprescribed drops into the ear.
