What is the first treatment for keratoacanthoma?

A keratoacanthoma is a fast-growing, firm skin lump with a central keratin plug. Its appearance can overlap with squamous cell carcinoma, so a clinician should examine it rather than relying on how it looks at home. Removing the lesion allows the tissue to be assessed and treats the visible growth at the same time.

Curettage and cautery involves scraping away the growth and using heat to control bleeding and treat the base. Surgical excision removes the lesion with a margin of surrounding skin, followed by closure of the wound.
