What is the first treatment tried for insect bites and stings?

Most local reactions cause redness, warmth, swelling, soreness or itching around the bite or sting. Move away from the insect, remove a visible bee stinger by scraping rather than squeezing, and wash the skin gently. A cool wrapped pack can reduce discomfort. Allergy Medication may help itching or a wider local reaction when suitable. Avoid scratching because broken skin can become infected.

Keep the area clean and raise an arm or leg if swelling is uncomfortable. Follow medicine directions carefully and do not apply products to broken skin unless advised. Arrange a GP Consultation if redness spreads, pain increases, pus develops, the area feels hot, or symptoms are not settling. Record what caused the reaction if known.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, difficulty swallowing, widespread hives, dizziness or collapse. Urgent assessment is also needed after a sting inside the mouth or throat or after numerous stings.

Ask whether the reaction is local or allergic, which medicine is suitable, how to avoid repeat exposure, and whether you need an emergency action plan.
