What is the first treatment tried for granuloma annulare?

Granuloma annulare is an inflammatory skin condition that can produce smooth, firm bumps arranged in rings or arcs. It is not the same as a fungal infection, so an antifungal cream is not automatically useful. Some localised areas cause little discomfort and may be observed after the diagnosis is confirmed.

A topical corticosteroid is applied to the affected skin to reduce inflammation. If a lesion is thicker, persistent, or limited to a small area, a clinician may inject steroid into the skin. The choice depends on the site, thickness, symptoms, age, and whether the diagnosis is certain.

Have a clinician examine new ring-shaped bumps before treating them, because similar appearances can occur with fungal infection, eczema, or other conditions. Use a prescribed topical corticosteroid in the amount and duration advised, and avoid applying it to sensitive areas unless specifically instructed.

Tell the clinician about diabetes, pregnancy, children in the household, other skin medicines, and previous reactions to steroids. An injection can cause temporary tenderness or a lighter or thinner patch at the treated site, so it should be placed only when the expected benefit is appropriate.

Arrange review if the rash spreads quickly, becomes painful, ulcerates, drains, or affects the eyes, mouth, or genitals. Return for reassessment if the diagnosis is uncertain or the prescribed treatment irritates the skin instead of settling it.
