What is the first treatment for glioma?

Glioma is a group of brain tumours rather than one single disease. Scans show its position and appearance, while tissue examination can identify the tumour type, grade and useful molecular features. Surgery may remove visible tumour, reduce pressure, and provide the tissue needed for a precise diagnosis.

If removing the tumour could harm speech, movement, vision or other important functions, the team may take a smaller sample or recommend a different sequence. Radiotherapy may be used after surgery or as an initial treatment when surgery is not suitable. The plan is individual rather than automatic.

Bring a list of medicines and describe seizures, headaches, balance changes, weakness, speech difficulty and memory problems. Ask when pathology results are expected and which specialist will coordinate the next decision. Discuss recovery time, driving, work, rehabilitation and support at home before an operation.

Keep your scan images and reports together. Ask whether the proposed treatment is based on the tumour grade, molecular findings, location or symptoms, and request an explanation of how radiotherapy would be used if it becomes part of the plan.

Get emergency help for a new seizure, prolonged seizure, sudden one-sided weakness, new speech or vision difficulty, loss of consciousness, severe confusion, or a rapidly worsening headache with vomiting. Contact the surgical team urgently after an operation for fever, worsening drowsiness, new neurological changes or drainage from the wound.

Ask whether surgery is intended for removal, biopsy or both; which brain functions are nearby; when the tumour type and grade will be confirmed; and what would make radiotherapy appropriate. Ask how symptoms will be monitored and who to contact outside clinic hours.
