What this means

Gastroenteritis affects the stomach and intestines and commonly causes diarrhoea, vomiting, cramps and sometimes fever. The immediate concern is fluid and electrolyte loss, rather than forcing a full meal. An oral rehydration solution supplies water and salts in a form the body can absorb. Many episodes improve with supportive care, but the plan changes if dehydration, severe pain or another illness is suspected.

What to do first

Sip oral rehydration solution regularly; after vomiting, restart with very small amounts and increase slowly. Continue breastfeeding if relevant, and eat simple foods when hunger returns. Avoid alcohol and very sweet drinks. Wash hands with soap and water and do not prepare food for others while you are unwell. A GP Consultation can review symptoms, hydration and medicines when recovery is not progressing.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for inability to keep fluids down, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, blood in stool or vomit, severe abdominal pain, or very little urine. Get advice promptly for infants, older adults, pregnancy or significant long-term illness because fluid loss can become serious more quickly. IV Fluid Therapy may be needed when oral rehydration is not enough or cannot be taken.
