What is the first treatment for fibroadenoma?

A fibroadenoma is a solid breast lump that is often benign. A breast ultrasound can show whether a lump looks solid or fluid-filled and can help guide the next step. The result is considered alongside your age, examination, symptoms, and any change in the lump.

If imaging cannot confidently identify the lump, a breast biopsy may be advised. A biopsy takes a small tissue sample for examination. If the diagnosis is clear and the lump is small and not troublesome, monitoring may be discussed rather than immediate surgery.

Book an appointment for any new breast lump, even if it is not painful. Note when you found it, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and whether there is nipple discharge or skin change. Bring previous breast imaging so the clinician can compare findings over time.

Seek prompt assessment for a lump that is growing, a new change in breast shape, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a swollen armpit. A breast lump is not by itself proof of cancer; many causes are benign, but examination and appropriate imaging are needed to identify the cause.
