What is the first treatment for Ewing sarcoma?

Ewing sarcoma can involve cells beyond the visible tumour, so chemotherapy is used early to treat disease throughout the body. After the initial drug treatment, the team usually plans local control with tumour removal surgery, radiotherapy, or both. The choice depends on the tumour’s position, size, response and proximity to important structures.

Treatment is coordinated by a specialist sarcoma team. Imaging and tissue diagnosis guide the plan, while blood tests and other checks help the team deliver chemotherapy safely.

Ask for referral to a sarcoma service and take all scan and pathology information to the appointment. Discuss the chemotherapy schedule, fertility preservation, infection precautions, and whether surgery or radiotherapy is expected for local control. Report new symptoms during treatment promptly.

During chemotherapy, contact the treatment team urgently for fever, chills, breathing difficulty, uncontrolled vomiting, unusual bleeding or a sudden worsening of pain. A rapidly enlarging lump, new weakness or loss of movement also needs prompt assessment.
