What is the first treatment for an elbow dislocation?

An elbow dislocation moves the joint surfaces out of alignment and may also injure bone, ligaments, nerves or blood vessels. A clinician usually examines circulation, sensation and finger movement, then uses imaging when needed. Closed Reduction gently guides the joint back into position without an open operation; pain relief or sedation may be used.

Treat a suspected dislocation as an emergency. Keep the arm still in the position found, support it, remove rings if swelling allows, and do not try to straighten or relocate the elbow yourself. After reduction, the arm may be supported while healing begins. Follow the prescribed movement plan because stiffness is common, and later Physiotherapy can rebuild motion and strength.

Seek emergency care immediately for a visibly deformed elbow, severe pain after an injury, an open wound, increasing swelling, or a hand that is cold, pale, blue, numb or weak. These signs can indicate a fracture, nerve injury or reduced blood flow.

Ask whether imaging shows a fracture, how long the joint should be supported, which movements are safe, and when rehabilitation should begin. Also ask which symptoms should trigger an urgent review.
