What is the first treatment for nappy rash?

Nappy rash commonly follows prolonged contact with moisture, stool, urine, friction, or irritating products. Rinse the area with lukewarm water or use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry rather than rubbing. A thick protective emollient can reduce contact between the skin and wetness. Avoid fragranced wipes, talc, and harsh antiseptics unless a clinician specifically recommends them.

Change the nappy promptly after wetting or soiling and allow short periods without a nappy when practical. Apply the barrier product to clean, dry skin and wash your hands before and after care. If the rash has clearly defined edges, small surrounding spots, or does not improve with basic measures, a clinician may consider a topical antifungal treatment rather than repeated barrier care alone.

Seek medical advice if the rash spreads, blisters, oozes, bleeds, becomes very painful, or is accompanied by fever, poor feeding, or unusual sleepiness. Get advice as well when gentle care is not helping or the skin remains broken.
