What is the first treatment for contact dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis is inflammation caused by contact with an irritant or an allergen. The skin may become red, itchy, dry, cracked, swollen, or blistered where exposure occurred. Removing the suspected product or substance gives the skin a chance to settle, while an emollient coats the surface and reduces water loss. The rash pattern and exposure history help a clinician decide whether further testing is needed.

Stop using the suspected cosmetic, cleanser, metal item, adhesive, or workplace substance when safe to do so, and protect your hands with suitable gloves if exposure cannot be avoided. Rinse irritants away gently and apply an emollient frequently, especially after washing. Do not scratch or use fragranced products on inflamed skin.
