What is the first treatment tried for chronic myeloid leukaemia?

Short answer

Targeted therapy is usually the first treatment for chronic myeloid leukaemia, with response checked through regular blood and molecular tests.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How targeted therapy works

Chronic myeloid leukaemia is driven by an abnormal signal that encourages certain blood cells to multiply. Targeted medicines block that signal and are taken on a continuing schedule chosen by the haematology team. Blood counts and molecular monitoring show whether the leukaemia is responding. The team may adjust the dose or change medicines if response is inadequate or side effects are difficult. Do not stop or skip doses without advice, because consistency supports accurate assessment.

Managing the first phase

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and tell the team about every prescription, supplement, and herbal product. Ask what to do after a missed dose and whether food affects the medicine. Keep blood-test appointments and record swelling, muscle cramps, rash, nausea, unusual tiredness, or other new symptoms. An allogeneic stem cell transplant is generally reserved for selected situations, such as resistance or intolerance to available targeted medicines, and requires a specialist discussion.

When to seek care

Call the haematology team promptly for a high temperature, unusual bleeding, severe abdominal fullness, worsening breathlessness, or sudden severe pain. Seek emergency help for fainting, confusion, severe breathing difficulty, or heavy bleeding. Never wait for a scheduled blood test when symptoms are acute or rapidly worsening.

Questions for your doctor

Which targeted medicine is recommended and why? How will molecular response be measured? Which side effects need a same-day call? Are there interactions with my current medicines? When would a transplant consultation be appropriate?

Questions people ask

Will targeted therapy cure chronic myeloid leukaemia?

It can control the leukaemia for many people, but treatment response and duration vary, so monitoring remains essential.

Is transplant the first step?

Usually not. It is considered for selected cases when targeted treatment is not effective, tolerated, or suitable.
