What is the first treatment tried for cholera?

Cholera can cause large amounts of watery diarrhoea and vomiting, which quickly remove water and essential salts from the body. Rehydration replaces these losses and supports circulation while the illness is assessed. Oral rehydration therapy may be used when the person is alert and able to drink. Intravenous fluid therapy is used when dehydration is severe or drinking is not possible.

Cholera symptoms need same-day medical assessment. Begin an oral rehydration solution if the person can swallow safely, taking frequent small sips, and continue while travelling for care. Do not rely on plain water alone to replace lost salts. A healthcare team may monitor alertness, urine, pulse, breathing and the ability to keep fluids down. Antibiotics or other treatment may be considered by clinicians for selected cases after rehydration has started.

Seek urgent care for repeated watery stools, persistent vomiting, intense thirst, very little urine, dizziness, unusual sleepiness, sunken eyes or cold hands and feet. A confused, fainting or unresponsive person needs emergency help immediately. Children, older adults and people with other illnesses can become dehydrated quickly.

Ask which rehydration method is suitable, how much to drink while waiting for review, which warning signs require escalation, and whether observation or hospital care is needed. Mention ongoing losses, recent travel and any difficulty drinking.
