What Is the First Treatment for Breast Abscess?

A breast abscess is a pocket of infected fluid in breast tissue. It can cause a tender lump, warmth, redness, swelling, and fever. An examination helps assess the breast, while ultrasound can show whether a lump contains fluid and can help guide drainage. A breast abscess is different from uncomplicated breast inflammation, so a persistent or enlarging lump needs review.

A clinician may numb the skin and drain the collection with a needle or a small incision. The fluid may be sent for testing, especially when the diagnosis is uncertain or symptoms return.
