What Is the First Treatment for a Baker's Cyst?

A Baker's cyst is a fluid-filled swelling behind the knee. It often reflects irritation or excess fluid within the knee, so the cyst may become more noticeable when the knee is bent or after activity. Treating the underlying joint problem can reduce the pressure that feeds the swelling.

A clinician may examine the knee and use imaging when the diagnosis is uncertain or another cause of swelling needs consideration. The size of the lump alone does not determine the right treatment.

Reduce activities that clearly increase knee swelling, but keep comfortable movement so the knee does not become stiff. Elevation, a wrapped cold pack and prescribed or suitable pain relief may help symptoms. Physiotherapy can address knee movement, thigh strength and the mechanics that keep irritating the joint.

Joint Aspiration uses a needle to remove fluid in selected cases. It may provide symptom relief, but the cyst can return if the knee condition that produced the fluid remains active. A clinician should decide whether aspiration is suitable.

Seek urgent assessment for sudden calf swelling or pain, warmth, redness, or breathlessness, because a ruptured cyst can resemble a blood clot and breathing symptoms can be serious. Arrange review for increasing knee pain, locking, fever, or a lump that is changing quickly. Do not massage a painful swollen calf before it has been assessed.

Ask what is irritating the knee, whether imaging is needed, and which activities are safe. Ask whether aspiration is appropriate, what symptoms should prompt urgent help, and how physiotherapy will be adjusted if the swelling persists.
