What Is the First Treatment for an Atypical Mole?

An atypical mole can have an uneven shape, varied colour, or an irregular border, but appearance alone cannot determine what it is. A clinician examines the mole and may compare it with earlier photographs or other moles. Excision removes the lesion, usually with a margin of nearby skin, so the tissue can be examined and the next step can be planned.

Do not cut, burn, or repeatedly irritate a changing mole at home. Make a note of changes in size, colour, border, surface, bleeding, or symptoms, and tell the clinician about medicines that affect bleeding or healing. Depending on the examination, the plan may be complete surgical excision or another form of mole removal. The clinician will explain wound care, scar position, and whether further treatment is needed after the tissue assessment.

Book a dermatology review promptly for a mole that is changing, newly symptomatic, bleeding without an obvious injury, crusting, or failing to heal. Seek earlier advice when changes are rapid or a mole looks noticeably different from your other moles. After removal, contact the clinic for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, wound separation, or fever.
