What is terbinafine used for?

Terbinafine is an antifungal medicine. It interferes with a substance fungi need to maintain their cell membranes, which can stop the organism from growing and help clear the infection. Depending on the site and diagnosis, it may be prescribed as a cream, gel, spray, or tablet.

Skin infections can include athlete's foot, ringworm, or fungal infection of the groin. Nail infections and scalp infections may require a different treatment plan because medicine has to reach the affected tissue. A rash that looks fungal is not necessarily caused by fungus, so confirmation matters.

Use terbinafine in the form and for the duration prescribed, and keep the affected skin clean and dry. Do not share towels, shoes, nail tools, or medicines. Tell the prescriber about liver disease, other medicines, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or previous reactions. If tablets are prescribed, follow any monitoring plan and report new symptoms rather than stopping or restarting treatment on your own.

Seek medical advice for a spreading rash, severe irritation, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or signs of infection such as increasing warmth, pus, or fever. While taking tablets, promptly report yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusually dark urine, persistent nausea, severe tiredness, or widespread blistering.
