What is tamoxifen used for?

Tamoxifen is a selective oestrogen receptor modulator. In breast tissue, it can attach to oestrogen receptors and reduce the signal that some breast cancer cells use to grow. It may be prescribed after initial treatment, for advanced disease, or as risk-reducing endocrine therapy when a person's clinical situation makes it appropriate.

It is taken by mouth according to an individual plan. The treatment length, dose, and whether it is combined with other therapy depend on the cancer features, menopausal status, other medicines, and the purpose of treatment.

Take tamoxifen exactly as prescribed and tell the oncology team about every medicine, supplement, and contraceptive product you use. Do not stop it without advice, even if you feel well. Report troublesome hot flushes, mood changes, vaginal symptoms, or other effects so the team can discuss practical options.

Keep appointments for treatment review. If pregnancy is possible, ask about reliable contraception and pregnancy planning because tamoxifen may not be suitable during pregnancy.

Seek urgent medical advice for sudden chest pain, breathlessness, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, unusual vaginal bleeding, or new severe headaches or weakness. These symptoms can have several causes, but they need prompt assessment while taking tamoxifen.
