What is a stoma appliance used for?

A stoma is an opening made through the abdominal wall so waste can leave the body when the usual route cannot be used. The appliance usually has a skin barrier that fits around the stoma and a pouch attached to it. The barrier helps reduce contact between output and the skin; the pouch stores the output until it is emptied or replaced.

Colostomies and ileostomies produce bowel output, while a urostomy drains urine. The pouch design and emptying routine depend on the type of stoma, the consistency of output, and the advice of the stoma-care nurse.

Empty the pouch before it becomes heavy, and check the skin barrier for lifting or leakage. Clean the surrounding skin gently, dry it fully, and apply replacement equipment exactly as taught. Do not cut the opening larger than needed, because exposed skin can become irritated. Keep spare pouches and skin-care supplies available when travelling or leaving home.

A nurse can show you how to measure the stoma, change the pouch, and recognise a good seal. Appliance changes may become easier with practice, but fit can change as swelling settles or the stoma changes shape.

Contact your stoma-care team if leakage continues, the skin is sore or broken, the pouch will not stay attached, or output changes markedly. Seek urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, heavy bleeding, a stoma that becomes dusky or black, or no output with swelling and pain.

Ask which pouch system suits your stoma, how often to change it, what skin products are safe, and whom to contact after-hours if a leak or blockage develops.
