What is stereotactic body radiotherapy done with?

A linear accelerator produces high-energy radiation and aims it at a defined target in the body. Before treatment, the team uses scans to map the tumour and nearby organs, then creates a plan that shapes the beams from several directions. A mould, cushion or other support may help you keep the same position. Imaging during treatment can help the team check the target position before radiation is given.

SBRT is designed for selected tumours outside the brain and may be delivered in a small number of carefully planned sessions. Whether it is suitable depends on the tumour location, movement from breathing, size, previous treatment and the condition of nearby organs.

Tell the radiation team about implanted devices, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, medicines and difficulty lying still. Follow instructions about eating, drinking or bladder preparation if provided. Wear comfortable clothing and ask how long planning and each session may take. Do not change medicines or miss appointments without contacting the team.

Report new or worsening symptoms after treatment, including persistent vomiting, severe pain, marked weakness, confusion, new numbness or difficulty breathing. The warning signs depend on the treated body area. Sudden severe breathlessness, collapse or a new seizure needs emergency help. Your radiation team can give area-specific instructions for monitoring skin, bowel, bladder or lung symptoms.
