What Is a Spinal Endoscope Used For?

The endoscope contains a small camera and light. The image is displayed on a monitor so the surgeon can inspect the area through a narrow working passage. Small instruments may pass alongside the camera to remove or release tissue, depending on the planned operation. The approach can be considered for selected disc, nerve, or narrowing problems, but the exact indication depends on scans, symptoms, and examination findings.

Endoscopic spine surgery is still surgery. The camera does not make every spinal condition treatable through a small access point, and an open approach may be more appropriate for some anatomy or goals.

Ask which spinal level will be treated, what the endoscope is expected to accomplish, and whether another approach is available. Share your medicines, allergies, prior operations, and any blood-thinning treatment. Follow the team’s instructions about fasting, transport, wound care, activity, and follow-up. Keep the incision clean as directed and report changes rather than adjusting care alone.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or a new change in strength or sensation. Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly progressing weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or difficulty breathing.
