What Is Shoulder Replacement Done With?

In an anatomic replacement, a metal ball replaces the damaged humeral head and a plastic socket component may replace the worn socket surface. A reverse replacement changes the arrangement so the ball and socket positions are switched; this can help the shoulder function when the rotator cuff cannot provide enough support.

Titanium may be used for a stem or other structural implant component. Highly cross-linked polyethylene is a durable plastic used in selected bearing or socket components. The design, fixation method, and material combination depend on bone quality, joint damage, tendon function, and the operation selected.

Ask whether an anatomic or reverse design is planned and why. Tell the team about allergies, previous shoulder surgery, dental problems, medicines, and other medical conditions. Plan help with dressing, washing, meals, and household tasks while arm movement is limited.

After surgery, protect the wound, use the sling as directed, and attend follow-up and rehabilitation appointments. Avoid pushing up from a chair or lifting until your surgeon or therapist confirms that the shoulder is ready.

Report fever, wound drainage, increasing redness, a sudden increase in pain, or a new change in shoulder shape. Seek urgent help for severe arm swelling, a cold or discoloured hand, new weakness, chest pain, or difficulty breathing.
