What Is Shoulder Arthroscopy Done With?

The arthroscope contains a camera and light. It sends a magnified view of the shoulder to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to inspect structures such as cartilage, tendons, the labrum, and the joint lining. Sterile fluid gently expands and clears the joint space so the view remains usable.

Other instruments can remove damaged tissue, smooth rough areas, repair a tendon or labrum, or address inflammation. The tools depend on the problem found and the procedure agreed before surgery. Arthroscopy may be combined with an open incision when a repair needs a different approach.

Before surgery, discuss the planned repair, anaesthesia, sling use, and whether you will need help at home. Share your medicines, allergies, and any previous shoulder operation. Arrange transport and keep the first recovery area free of obstacles.

Afterward, keep dressings and portals clean as instructed, use the sling if prescribed, and begin exercises only as directed. Do not test the repair by lifting or reaching early; the safe pace depends on what was treated.

Contact the surgical team for increasing redness, drainage, fever, uncontrolled pain, or swelling that is getting worse. Seek urgent help for a cold or pale hand, new loss of movement or sensation, chest pain, or breathing difficulty.
