What is risk-reducing endocrine therapy done with?

Tamoxifen is a tablet that attaches to oestrogen receptors in breast tissue. By reducing oestrogen’s effect there, it can lower the chance that some hormone-sensitive abnormal cells grow. It is used for selected people whose personal history, family history, inherited risk, or breast findings suggest that preventive treatment could be considered.

Risk-reducing therapy is different from treating an established cancer. It does not remove an existing breast lump or replace recommended imaging and clinical assessment. The decision balances possible benefit with side effects, medical history, age, reproductive plans, and other medicines.

Take tamoxifen exactly as prescribed and tell your clinician about blood clots, stroke, uterine problems, liver disease, pregnancy possibility, breastfeeding, and all medicines or supplements. Do not stop it without discussing the reason. Keep planned breast checks and report troublesome symptoms so your team can review whether the treatment remains suitable.

Seek urgent help for sudden chest pain, breathlessness, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden weakness, or trouble speaking. Contact your clinician promptly for unexpected vaginal bleeding, new pelvic symptoms, severe headaches, or vision changes. These symptoms have several possible causes, but they should not be ignored while taking tamoxifen.

Ask why tamoxifen is being offered, how it fits your personal risk assessment, how long treatment is planned, and which symptoms should trigger a call. Ask about interactions, pregnancy planning, monitoring, and alternatives if side effects become difficult.
