What is a radiofrequency generator used for?

The generator is an external device. It connects to a probe placed through the skin near a nerve chosen by the clinician. The device can deliver radiofrequency energy in a measured way, while the clinical team monitors the treatment. Imaging helps guide the probe, and stimulation checks can help confirm its location before treatment begins.

Depending on the procedure, the energy may heat a small area around the nerve or be delivered in pulses. The aim is to change pain signalling without removing the nerve or treating every nerve in the region. The device is used only after an examination identifies a suitable target.

Before treatment, share your medical history, medicines, allergies and details of any implanted electronic device. Follow the clinic's instructions about food, drink and transport. Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the treatment area. After the procedure, protect the small puncture site as advised and resume activity step by step. Keep the follow-up appointment so your response and any new symptoms can be reviewed.

Call the treatment team if the puncture site becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or starts draining, or if fever develops. Get urgent help for new or worsening weakness, difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe symptoms that develop suddenly.
