What is radiofrequency ablation done with?

The generator creates controlled radiofrequency energy. The clinician guides a sterile needle-like probe toward a selected nerve, often using imaging to confirm its position. A small electrical check may help identify the intended nerve and reduce the chance of treating the wrong area. When the position is suitable, the probe warms a focused zone of nerve tissue so pain signals from that nerve are reduced. The treatment is targeted; it does not remove the spine or joint itself.

The exact probe type, energy setting and number of treated sites depend on the pain source and the body region. Radiofrequency ablation is often discussed for pain arising from small spinal joints, but suitability requires an assessment and sometimes diagnostic nerve blocks.

Tell the treating team about medicines, allergies, pregnancy, implanted electrical devices and any infection or illness. Follow the instructions about eating, drinking and medicines before the appointment. Arrange transport if sedation is planned. Afterward, follow the wound-care and activity advice, and increase movement gradually rather than testing the treated area immediately. Temporary soreness or altered sensation can occur while the area settles; report symptoms that concern you.

Contact the clinic promptly for worsening redness, drainage, fever, increasing swelling or pain that is difficult to control. Seek urgent medical help for new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe breathing difficulty or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction.

Ask which nerve is being targeted, how imaging will guide the probe, whether sedation is planned, which medicines need adjustment and what activity limits apply after treatment.
