What is a radial pressure wave device used for?

The device sends repeated pressure pulses from an applicator placed against the skin. The therapist selects the treatment area and adjusts the intensity and pace according to the tissue, symptoms and response. The pulses are intended to create a mechanical stimulus in the treated region and are often combined with stretching, strengthening and activity changes. Radial pressure waves are delivered from the surface and differ from focused wave systems in how energy is distributed. Suitability depends on the diagnosis and medical history.

Tell the physiotherapist about your diagnosis, medicines, bleeding tendency, skin problems, pregnancy and any implanted device near the treatment area. Wear clothing that allows access to the region. During a session, report sharp or intolerable pain rather than enduring it. Follow the advised exercise and loading plan between sessions; the device is one part of care, and changing the activity that irritates the tissue may be just as relevant to recovery.

Contact the clinic if marked swelling, bruising, skin irritation, numbness or worsening pain persists after treatment. Seek prompt medical assessment for fever, spreading redness, sudden weakness or an injury that changes your ability to use the limb. Tell the therapist immediately if the applicator causes unusual symptoms. Urgent symptoms such as chest pain or severe breathlessness need emergency care, not another therapy session.
