What is a quadriceps tendon graft used for?

The quadriceps tendon connects the quadriceps muscle to the kneecap. During graft preparation, the surgeon takes a section of this strong tendon, usually with a planned bone or soft-tissue portion depending on the technique, and places it along the path of the injured ligament. It is secured inside the knee so the body can incorporate and remodel it over time. The graft choice depends on sport, work demands, previous surgery, knee anatomy and the surgeon’s assessment.

After reconstruction, rehabilitation protects the graft while restoring knee extension, bending, quadriceps control, walking and balance. Use the brace or crutches as directed and do not advance running, jumping or pivoting until the rehabilitation team clears those activities. Regular exercises help address stiffness and muscle inhibition, while gradual strengthening prepares the knee for daily tasks and, when appropriate, sport-specific movement. Follow-up checks help identify progress and adjust the programme.

Contact the surgical team for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, calf pain or swelling, or a sudden deterioration in knee movement. Seek urgent care for severe shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, or a foot that becomes cold, pale or blue. A painful setback after a twist or fall should also be reported rather than tested through exercise.
