What is the progestogen-only pill done with?

This pill contains progestogen without oestrogen. Depending on the product, it can make cervical mucus harder for sperm to pass and may prevent ovulation. Different brands have different instructions for timing, missed pills and restarting after a break, so the leaflet and prescriber’s advice matter.

Bleeding patterns may change. Some people have lighter or less predictable bleeding, while others have spotting or no bleeding. The pill does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Levonorgestrel is one progestogen used in some contraceptive products; the exact medicine and strength should be confirmed on the pack.

Take the tablet at the same time each day and keep a reminder if that helps. If you vomit soon after taking it, have severe diarrhoea or miss a dose, follow the product instructions or contact a pharmacist because protection may be affected. Tell the prescriber about breastfeeding, liver disease, unexplained bleeding and every medicine or herbal product you use.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe lower abdominal pain, fainting, chest pain, difficulty breathing or one-sided leg swelling. Arrange medical advice for persistent heavy bleeding, a positive pregnancy test, or symptoms that began after starting the pill. A clinician can check for pregnancy, review other causes and discuss another contraceptive option if needed.
