What is preconception care done with?

Short answer

Preconception care is done with a health review, medication check, lifestyle advice, vaccination planning and selected supplements.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Folic acid and, when appropriate, vitamin D

What is reviewed before pregnancy

A clinician reviews long-term conditions, previous pregnancies, menstrual health, medicines and mental wellbeing. They may check whether vaccinations are up to date and discuss infections, dental care, sleep, nutrition, smoking, alcohol and other substances. The aim is to identify changes that can be made before conception and to plan safer care if pregnancy begins.

Folic acid is commonly discussed because it supports early fetal development. Vitamin D supplementation may also be considered based on individual health, diet and local clinical advice. Supplements are not interchangeable, and some products contain ingredients that are unsuitable during pregnancy, so bring every supplement to the appointment.

Steps you can take

Book a visit before trying to conceive if possible. Bring a list of prescriptions, non-prescription medicines and supplements, along with vaccination information and details of relevant family conditions. Do not stop a prescribed medicine suddenly; ask how it should be adjusted or replaced. Begin the preparation recommended by your clinician, attend needed checks and agree how to manage an existing condition during pregnancy.

When to seek medical advice

Arrange prompt advice if you are pregnant while taking a medicine that has not been reviewed, have poorly controlled diabetes, high blood pressure or seizures, or develop severe symptoms. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting or trouble breathing. A preconception visit remains useful after conception if it did not happen beforehand.

Questions for your doctor

Which medicines and supplements should I continue, change or avoid? Do I need folic acid, vitamin D or vaccination updates? Which health conditions or family factors need a plan before pregnancy? When should I arrange my first pregnancy appointment?

Questions people ask

Can preconception care help if I am already pregnant?

Yes. Contact a clinician promptly for medication review, vaccination advice and condition-specific care if pregnancy has already started.

Should I stop medicines before trying for a baby?

No. Some medicines need adjustment, but stopping suddenly can be harmful; ask the prescriber for a safe plan.
