What are plates and screws used for?

A plate sits along the surface of a bone, while screws pass through the plate and into bone. Together they can bridge a fracture, compress a joint for fusion, or hold a bone after an osteotomy has changed its angle. The implant choice depends on the bone, fracture pattern, soft tissues, and the movement expected during recovery. Fixation supports healing but does not replace the body’s bone-repair process.

Follow the instructions for weight-bearing, splint use, wound care, and physiotherapy because loading too early can affect healing. Keep the incision clean and attend imaging appointments when arranged. Tell your clinician about persistent rubbing from prominent hardware, new numbness, increasing swelling, or pain that changes rather than gradually settling. Metal implants can often stay in place, but removal is considered only for a clear clinical reason.

Seek urgent assessment for a cold, pale, or blue limb, severe pain with new numbness, inability to move the fingers or toes, or sudden loss of function. Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, spreading redness, wound drainage, or an incision that opens.
