What Is a PET-CT Scanner Used For?

The PET component detects a radiotracer’s distribution, which can highlight areas with increased metabolic activity. The CT component supplies cross-sectional detail about organs, bones, and other structures. Viewed together, these images can help a clinical team assess a known cancer, look for disease in other parts of the body, or examine whether treatment is changing abnormal activity.

A scan is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings, and other tests. Increased tracer activity does not identify its cause by itself; infection, inflammation, and normal body processes can also affect an image.

Follow the centre’s preparation instructions and tell staff about diabetes, pregnancy or breastfeeding, kidney problems, allergies, and any difficulty remaining still. The tracer is usually given before a quiet waiting period. During imaging, lie as still as you can and tell the team if you feel unwell or uncomfortable.

Ask how your results will be shared and whether another scan or test is needed to interpret an unexpected finding. Keep your follow-up appointment so the images can be considered with your wider care plan.

Tell the imaging team immediately about breathing difficulty, throat or facial swelling, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash after an injection. Emergency help is appropriate for severe breathing problems or collapse. Report persistent or increasing pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site.

Ask what question the scan is meant to answer, which body areas will be included, whether contrast is needed, and how the result may affect the next treatment decision. Ask when and with whom you will review the report.
