What Is PARP Inhibitor Therapy Done With?

The therapy uses tablets or capsules that block PARP proteins involved in DNA repair. Before treatment, the oncology team may review the cancer type, prior treatments, tumour testing and, when relevant, inherited genetic testing. This information helps determine whether the approach fits the person’s situation.

Treatment may be used alone or in a wider care plan that includes scans, symptom control and other cancer medicines. The exact combination and sequence depend on the diagnosis, treatment history, organ function and response over time.

Take each dose according to the prescription and keep the medicine in its original container. Attend scheduled blood tests and appointments so the team can assess blood counts, kidney function, liver function and symptoms. Report every prescription, over-the-counter medicine and supplement before starting or changing it.

Fatigue, nausea, appetite changes, diarrhoea and low blood counts can occur. Ask for practical support early, including advice about food, hydration, activity and medicines for side effects. Do not stop or restart treatment on your own.

Call the oncology team promptly for fever, chills, new infection symptoms, unusual bleeding or bruising, severe breathlessness, faintness, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, or a major drop in energy. Ask in advance which number to use outside clinic hours.
