What is a nebuliser used for?

The mist carries medicine into the airways. Depending on the prescription, it may relax tightened airway muscles, reduce swelling or help loosen mucus. Nebulisers may be used when symptoms are severe, when a person cannot use an inhaler effectively, or when a clinician has specifically prescribed this method.

A nebuliser is a delivery device, not a medicine by itself. The liquid placed in it must be the one prescribed for that person. Using another person’s solution, tap water or leftover medicine can be unsafe or ineffective.

Wash your hands, assemble the device as instructed and sit upright. Keep the mask fitted or seal your lips around the mouthpiece, then breathe calmly until the medicine has been delivered. Do not change the dose or treatment time without advice.

Clean and dry the cup, mask or mouthpiece after use according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Replace parts when advised. If the machine does not produce mist, check the tubing, power supply and medicine cup rather than taking extra doses.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, inability to speak in full sentences or rapidly worsening wheeze. Seek medical advice if treatment gives no relief, causes marked shaking or palpitations, or breathing repeatedly worsens after it.

Ask which medicine belongs in the cup, how often to use it, how to clean the equipment and what action plan to follow if symptoms do not improve.
