What Is a Musculoskeletal CT Scan Done With?

During the scan, you lie or sit in a position while the scanner collects X-ray views around the body part. A computer combines those views into slices and can create reconstructed images in different planes. CT is particularly useful for showing bone alignment, small fractures, joint surfaces, and complex anatomy. Some examinations use contrast material to make selected tissues or blood vessels easier to assess; the imaging team decides whether it is needed.

A weight-bearing CT can capture certain bones and joints while they support the body, which may reveal alignment that changes when you stand. It is not appropriate for every person or every question.

Tell the imaging team if you could be pregnant, have kidney problems, have reacted to contrast before, or take regular medicines. Wear clothing without metal when possible and remove jewellery from the scanning area. You need to remain still, and you may be asked to hold your breath briefly. If contrast is planned, follow the specific eating, drinking, and medication instructions provided by the facility.

A CT appointment is not a substitute for urgent assessment after a serious injury. Seek prompt care for a limb that looks deformed, becomes cold or pale, develops rapidly increasing swelling, or has new numbness or weakness. After contrast, urgent help is needed for trouble breathing, facial swelling, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash.

Ask what body position will be used, whether weight-bearing images are useful, whether contrast is planned, how your radiation exposure is being limited, and when the report will guide treatment.
