What is misoprostol used for?

Misoprostol is a medicine that acts on the cervix and uterus. In medical management of miscarriage, it can help the uterus empty pregnancy tissue without an operation. In induction of labour, it may help the cervix become softer and thinner and start contractions when birth needs to be initiated. The exact route and schedule depend on the clinical situation and local protocol.

Take or use misoprostol only as directed by the maternity or gynaecology team. Cramping and vaginal bleeding may be expected, so ask what level is anticipated and how to manage discomfort. Arrange the planned check to confirm that treatment has worked. Do not use leftover tablets or share them, and tell the team about medicines, allergies and any possibility of an ectopic pregnancy.

Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, fever that persists, feeling very unwell or difficulty breathing. After miscarriage treatment, urgent assessment is also needed if pain or bleeding worsens rather than settles, or if pregnancy symptoms continue.
