What Are Mesenchymal Stem Cells Used For?

Mesenchymal stem cells are cells that can be obtained from sources such as bone marrow or fat, depending on the treatment protocol. They can interact with surrounding tissues and release signalling molecules. In orthopaedics, clinicians may discuss them in relation to cartilage, tendon, bone, or joint symptoms.

The term does not mean that a damaged joint will automatically regrow or that an injection can replace surgery. Cell source, preparation, delivery method, diagnosis, and the condition of the tissue all affect what a treatment might reasonably be expected to do. Some uses remain under clinical evaluation, and regulation and availability differ by location.
