This medicine is given through a vein or sometimes a muscle, with close observation by the maternity team. Its main pregnancy role is reducing seizure risk when high blood pressure and related findings are severe. A specialist team may also use it when very early birth is expected, because it can offer neuroprotection for the baby. It is different from taking a magnesium supplement for general nutrition and is not a home treatment for raised blood pressure.

The team checks blood pressure, breathing, reflexes, urine output, and how you feel during treatment. You may notice warmth, flushing, nausea, sleepiness, or irritation where an injection was given. Tell staff immediately about increasing weakness, blurred vision, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, or very little urine. Share details of kidney problems and any medicines or supplements before treatment, since these can affect monitoring and dosing.

During pregnancy or after birth, call emergency services for a seizure, severe headache, new vision changes, severe upper-abdominal pain, confusion, difficulty breathing, or sudden collapse. These warning signs can occur around serious pregnancy-related blood-pressure illness. Do not wait for a scheduled appointment, and do not try to replace hospital treatment with an oral magnesium product.
