Short answer

Long COVID is a condition in which symptoms continue or appear after the initial COVID-19 illness has passed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What long COVID can involve

People may feel unwell for weeks or longer after the infection itself has settled. Symptoms can change over time, come and go, or become more noticeable after physical or mental effort. Common problems include fatigue, difficulty concentrating, joint pain, changes in smell or taste, and low mood. A person may have one symptom or several, and the pattern can differ from someone else’s experience.

Long COVID is also called post-COVID-19 syndrome. It can follow a mild or severe episode of COVID-19, and ongoing symptoms do not necessarily mean that the original infection is still active. A clinician may consider other explanations for a symptom, so an assessment is useful when recovery is not progressing.

What you can do now

Keep a simple record of symptoms, activity, sleep and anything that makes you feel worse or better. Break tasks into manageable periods, allow recovery time, and increase activity gradually rather than pushing through a flare. Regular meals, fluids and a steady sleep routine may support day-to-day coping.

Arrange a primary-care appointment if symptoms interfere with work, study, movement, sleep or mood. Take your symptom record and mention any medicines, previous health conditions and the date of your COVID-19 illness. Your clinician can check for other causes and discuss support for individual symptoms.

When to seek care urgently

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, blue or grey lips, or sudden weakness. Contact a clinician promptly if exhaustion, low mood, pain or concentration problems are stopping you from managing basic daily activities. New symptoms should be assessed rather than automatically attributed to long COVID.

Questions for your doctor

Could another condition or medicine be contributing to these symptoms? Which activities should I pace, and how can I return to them safely? What warning signs should make me seek urgent help? Would checking my breathing, heart, blood tests or mood help guide the next step?

Questions people ask

Can long COVID happen after mild COVID-19?

Yes. Ongoing symptoms can follow an illness that was mild, as well as one that required hospital care.

Is long COVID the same as still having COVID-19?

Not necessarily. Persistent symptoms can remain after the original infection has ended, so a clinician may assess both the symptoms and other possible causes.
