What is liquid biopsy done with?

Short answer

Liquid biopsy is usually done with a blood sample analysed for tumour-related DNA and other signals.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Sample
Blood collected by venepuncture
Laboratory focus
Tumour-related fragments, including circulating tumour DNA
Interpretation
Considered with scans, pathology, and clinical information

What the test examines

A clinician draws blood into collection tubes, and a laboratory separates components such as plasma. The laboratory looks for fragments of genetic material released by tumour cells into the bloodstream. This is often called circulating tumour DNA testing. The result may help a specialist look for tumour-related changes, support treatment planning, or monitor changes over time when the test is appropriate.

A blood-based test does not always replace a tissue biopsy. Tumours can release different amounts of detectable material, and a blood result may be uninformative even when cancer is present. Your team interprets the result alongside symptoms, scans, pathology, and your treatment history. Explore [Circulating Tumour DNA Testing](/technology/circulating-tumour-dna-testing/) for more detail.

Before the blood draw

Ask whether you need to fast, bring a medication list, or arrange the draw at a particular point in treatment. Tell the team about difficult blood draws, medicines that affect bleeding, or recent transfusion if relevant. Drink water unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Confirm what the test is intended to answer and when the result will guide a decision.

After the sample is taken

Keep pressure on the puncture site for as long as the nurse advises. Contact the clinic if bleeding does not settle, swelling becomes painful, or the area becomes increasingly red and warm. Seek urgent help for fainting that does not quickly resolve, severe shortness of breath, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what material is being tested, whether the result could change your treatment, whether tissue testing is also needed, and how an unclear result will be handled. Ask who will explain the findings and what timing matters for your next appointment.

Questions people ask

Is liquid biopsy done with surgery?

The sample is generally collected with a blood draw, although additional tissue testing may still be recommended.

Can liquid biopsy find every tumour?

No. Detectability varies, so a negative or unclear blood result may need further assessment.
