What is lidocaine local anaesthetic used for?

Lidocaine interrupts pain signals in the nerves near where it is applied or injected. You may remain awake and notice pressure, movement or touch even though sharp pain is reduced. The numbness fades as the medicine wears off.

Clinicians may use it for procedures such as draining an abscess, treating an ingrown toenail or closing a wound with sutures. They select the amount and method after checking the site, the procedure and your medical history.

Tell the clinician about previous reactions to local anaesthetics, heart-rhythm problems, liver disease, pregnancy and medicines you take. During the procedure, report sharp pain, dizziness, ringing in the ears or a racing heartbeat so the team can pause and assess you.

Protect a numb area from heat, pressure and accidental bites until normal sensation returns. Follow the wound or procedure instructions, including keeping any dressing clean.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, widespread hives, seizure, severe confusion or collapse after lidocaine. Contact the treating clinic if numbness lasts much longer than expected, pain escalates or the treated area becomes increasingly red or swollen.
