What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing Done With?

A CO2 laser can deliver deeper ablative energy, removing precise columns or layers of damaged skin and heating nearby tissue. A thulium laser is commonly used for more superficial, fractional treatment, where microscopic treated areas are separated by untreated skin. The choice depends on the concern, skin type, treatment area, and the amount of recovery a person can manage.

Resurfacing may be considered for texture changes, selected scars, fine lines, or uneven pigmentation. It is not the same as a general facial: the laser creates a planned skin injury, followed by a healing period.

Before treatment, tell the clinician about recent tanning, cold sores, active acne or dermatitis, medicines, and a history of raised scars or pigment changes. Follow instructions about pausing irritating products and protecting the area from sunlight. Afterward, use only the recommended cleanser, ointment, and sunscreen, and do not pick peeling skin or remove crusts.

Contact the treating clinic if pain is worsening rather than settling, redness spreads, swelling becomes marked, blisters appear, or the area develops pus or an unpleasant smell. Fever or breathing difficulty needs urgent medical attention. A persistent change in colour or delayed healing also deserves a review.

Ask whether CO2, thulium, or another setting fits your concern; whether the treatment is fractional; how the area should be prepared; and which symptoms are expected during healing. Discuss pigment risk, cold-sore prevention, downtime, and when makeup or active skincare can resume.
