What is kyphoplasty done with?

Using image guidance, the clinician advances a narrow working channel into the affected vertebra. A small balloon is expanded inside the collapsed area to create a cavity and may help restore some height. The balloon is then removed, and bone cement is delivered into the space. The cement hardens inside the vertebra and provides internal support. The technique is intended for selected spinal compression fractures, not every source of back pain.

Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, infection, pregnancy possibility, or new neurological symptoms. Follow instructions about fasting and medicines. Afterward, follow the advised activity limits and wound care, and ask when walking, lifting, and physiotherapy can resume. Treatment of weak bones may also be discussed to reduce the chance of further fractures.

Seek urgent assessment for new leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe worsening back pain, difficulty breathing, chest pain, or a new problem with walking after the procedure. Contact the treating team for fever, increasing wound redness, drainage, or pain that is worsening instead of settling.
