What is ivermectin used for?

Ivermectin is an anti-parasitic medicine. A cream may be prescribed for inflammatory bumps and redness associated with rosacea, while other formulations may be used for infestations such as scabies. The route, strength and application schedule differ, so a skin cream should not be substituted for tablets or another product.

For scabies, treatment plans can include addressing close household contacts and laundering recently used clothing or bedding. The medicine treats the mites, but itching can linger after the infestation has cleared because the skin may remain reactive.

Use ivermectin exactly as directed and apply it only to the areas and skin surfaces specified. Wash your hands before and after applying a topical product, unless the hands are the treatment area. Avoid contact with the eyes, lips and broken skin unless your clinician gives different instructions.

Do not share prescribed medicine or add another anti-parasitic treatment without checking first. Tell the prescriber about pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, liver problems and all medicines you take, particularly before an oral course.

Seek prompt medical advice for facial swelling, breathing trouble, widespread blistering, severe dizziness or a rapidly worsening rash after ivermectin. Arrange a review if the suspected infestation remains active, new lesions keep appearing, or irritation becomes difficult to tolerate.

Ask which formulation is intended, where it should be applied, how long to use it, and whether household contacts need assessment. Confirm what improvement should look like and what to do if itching continues after treatment.
