What is iron therapy done with?
Short answer
Iron therapy is done with oral iron supplements or an iron infusion selected for your clinical needs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Oral route
- Tablets, capsules, or liquid
- Intravenous route
- Iron delivered through a vein with clinical observation
The two treatment routes
Oral iron, including tablets, capsules, or liquid, passes through the digestive system and gradually replenishes iron. An intravenous infusion delivers iron through a cannula into a vein and may be considered when oral treatment is unsuitable, poorly tolerated, not absorbed well, or a quicker replacement plan is needed. The choice depends on blood results, symptoms, the reason for deficiency, pregnancy status, other illnesses, and previous reactions. [Iron Supplement](/materials/iron-supplement/) describes the material used in oral replacement.
Before and during treatment
Bring a list of medicines and supplements and mention allergies, asthma, inflammatory conditions, kidney problems, pregnancy, or previous infusion reactions. Take oral treatment exactly as directed and discuss troublesome nausea or constipation. For an infusion, staff usually observe you during and shortly after administration. Do not arrange treatment without confirming that iron deficiency has been assessed and that ongoing blood loss is being investigated. See [Iron Therapy](/treatments/medical-gynaecology/iron-therapy/) for the treatment context.
When to get help
During or after an infusion, immediately report itching, rash, swelling, wheezing, dizziness, chest discomfort, or difficulty breathing. Seek urgent care for severe symptoms or fainting. With oral iron, contact your clinician about persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or bleeding. Worsening breathlessness, palpitations, or marked weakness also needs prompt assessment because anaemia or its cause may require review.
Questions to ask
Why is this route recommended for me? How will side effects be managed? What follow-up tests will show whether iron has been replaced? What might be causing the low iron?

Questions people ask
Is an iron infusion the same as an iron tablet?
Both provide iron, but an infusion delivers it into a vein while tablets or liquid use the digestive system.
Can iron therapy treat the reason for low iron?
It replaces iron, but ongoing blood loss, absorption problems, or another cause may need separate evaluation.
