What is a hysterectomy done with?

A hysterectomy removes the uterus. Depending on the reason for surgery, the surgeon may also discuss removing the cervix, fallopian tubes, or ovaries; these are separate decisions that should be explained before consent.

An abdominal hysterectomy uses an incision in the lower abdomen. A vaginal hysterectomy removes the uterus through the vagina. Laparoscopic surgery uses a camera and instruments passed through small abdominal incisions, while robotic surgery uses instruments controlled by the surgeon from a console. The suitable approach depends on anatomy, the uterus, previous operations, the reason for treatment, and overall health.

Ask the gynaecological surgeon which route is recommended and why. Discuss anaesthesia, expected hospital care, recovery restrictions, pain relief, wound care, and how the operation may affect bleeding, fertility, and hormone production.

Before surgery, share all medicines, allergies, medical conditions, and any possibility of pregnancy. Arrange practical support for early recovery, including transport and help with lifting or household tasks.

After a hysterectomy, contact the surgical team promptly for heavy or worsening bleeding, fever, increasing abdominal pain, foul-smelling discharge, vomiting, difficulty passing urine, or a wound that becomes red and swollen. Sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness, or a painful swollen leg needs emergency assessment.

Ask which organs will be removed, whether the cervix and ovaries will remain, what incision or instruments will be used, and when you can return to work, exercise, driving, and sexual activity.
